ROBERT MONTANO was born in Bayside, Queens, not too far
from Belmont Racetrack where he started his first
professional career as a Racehorse Jockey at age 16. He
rode with the best (Angel Cordero, Steve Cauthen, etc...) at
Aqueduct, Saratoga and various tracks throughout the
country before Mother Nature caught up with him. By age
18, he literally outgrew his jockey silks and could not
make the strict weight requirements. He then became an
exercise rider at Hialeah Racecourse where they were
filming Franco Zefferelli’s “The Champ.” Between that
moment of watching the filming of “The Champ” and the
excitement of “Saturday Night Fever,” Robert was determined
to work in film and theatre. Never having danced before,
he then traded his riding boots for ballet shoes and began
at age 20 at Adelphi University where he earned a
scholarship and a BFA. One week before he graduated he
booked his first professional theatre job, “CATS,” in
Vienna, Austria, singing Andrew Lloyd Weber’s score in
“German.” He later made his way back home to join the
Broadway Company to sing it in his native tongue.
